Welcome to Campus Chess Club located at the University of Utah.
Here we strive to assist anyone interested in the game of chess to become a better player. All student and non-student chess players are welcome.

The U of U chess club is currently recruiting players for the 2008 College Chess League team tournament. If you would like to represent your university, all you have to do is contact us and we will sign you up. Playing on the team will take no more than a couple of hours per match and there will be only 5 matches in the tournament. So these light-weight time requirements fit into most of our busy college student schedules. Everyone is encouraged to participate, regardless of skill level. All games are played online so there is no need to travel. You can play for our team from your living room couch!

If you are interested in attending the chess club, please see our meetings schedule.

Sponsors Needed!

The university chess club is currently looking for sponsors that are willing to fund a team of four U of U student players to the Pan-American Intercollegiate chess tournament held this December. If you would like to contribute, please contact Toly. We greatly appreciate any and all contributions and we would be happy to return the favor.

Utah Competes In the Pan-American Tournament

U of U has finally achieved its long term goal of sending a representative team to the annual Pan-American chess tournament! Thanks to Connie Gaskill, who donated plane tickets, the University of Utah was able to send Daniel Torba and Heiko Bugger to this very prestigious event.

Utah Meets High Expectations in CCL

With the conclusion of the College Chess League Fall 2007 individual tournament, it is no surprise that Ivan leads the team with 4 wins and 1 loss in the final round against a 2129 rated expert. See how we did here.

U of U Team WINS the 2007 Utah Team Championship (photos)

Congratulations to our U of U team consisting of Ivan Martynenko, Enrique Arce-Larreta, and Petro Grechanei for winning in this very prestigious event. Many games were close, well played, and tough versus some of the best Chess players in Utah. Also, our Chess Club had two other teams that played in this team tournament composed of U of U students, U of U Alumni, Staff, and a very Strong Student Chess Player from University of LaSalle located in Mexico City, Mexico.

Our club advisor, Robert, estimates that at least 50% of all of the Chess Players in the tournament had some connection to the University of Utah (either Students, Alumni, Faculty, Staff, Affiliates, etc). The Coffee Club from Talorsville, Utah lead by John Coffey who provided a lot of support to the Chess Club at the University of Utah in the 1990's. Utah State University, Salt Lake Community College, the Chen Family and Whittier Elementary School each had a team play in this tournament.

Utah Players Shine in US Open

U of U chess team's 1st team player Petro Grechanei tied for 3rd place with 5 out of 6 points, losing only to the champion! U of U alumni Scott Burris came in 2nd with 5.5 points. Both of their post ratings take them out of the U1600 section. Not bad for a relaxing weekend in Las Vegas!

About Campus Chess Club

Whether a new player or an advanced player, student or non-student, the club strives to teach new game skills to everyone who attends.

To state the obvious, we play a lot of chess during the meetings. We also talk about competitions and such and try to provide a way for students and non-students to play and compete. We hold an annual U of U Championship tournament and once in a while, we host unofficial club blitz tournaments. We also strive to organize intercollegiate chess matches. This November and December we are playing against some of the top college teams in the nation through the Internet College Chess League. To see how we are doing, go to the events page.

There is no commitment or entry fee. No pressure. It is a very laid back environment and we encourage anyone who is interested in attending to come to the meetings.

Club Ratings Manager 1.1 - DOWNLOAD NOW!

The club ratings manager, coded by Toly Zharkikh, is a useful tool that allows chess clubs of any size to establish their own local ratings. It provides an easy way to report scores, calculate new ratings, and keep track of the club ladder. It is based on jsp and MySql. To see what it looks like, click here. I have decided to make it open source and now it is finally available to download.

And before you leave, be sure to check out my astronomy photo archive. Almost all those have been taken in Salt Lake City with a Starlight Xpress M5C CCD camera.
